Sierra redwood (giant sequoia)

Soft, scaly foliage and a distinctive look. A local favorite that needs plenty of water.

Sierra redwood, the same species as the giant sequoias of the Sierra Nevada, makes an unusual Christmas tree. Instead of needles it has soft, scaly, blue-green foliage that’s pleasant to touch, and young trees grow in a neat cone shape.

It’s a favorite at Santa Cruz Mountains farms because it feels local and looks different. The trade-off is that it dries faster than firs, so check the stand every day and keep it full. Lighter ornaments work best on its soft branches.
